Lucasfilm might not reveal Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) as secret lovers in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but director J.J. Abrams promises that there's still going to be some LGBTQ representation in the final entry in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Speaking with Variety during a press junket for the highly anticipated Star Wars movie, Abrams decided to address fans' hopes of seeing Poe and Finn together in The Rise of Skywalker. According to the filmmaker, the bond between the two goes far deeper than what a romantic relationship might offer.
"That relationship to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one," Abrams told the entertainment news outlet, "It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave."
Abrams isn't the only one debunking the possibility of Finn x Poe. Boyega and Isaacs have also said more or less the same thing in the interview with Variety. While this means that one of the fanbase's most popular ships isn't going to set sail, Abrams says that there's still going to be some sort of LGBTQ representation in The Rise of Skywalker.
According to the director, he's always worked hard to find a cast for his Star Wars movies that "looked more the way the world looks than not."
"And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they're being represented in the film," the filmmaker continued.
Rumors say that this LGBTQ representation is going to come from a few Resistance X-Wing fighters ā though we can't be entirely sure until Lucasfilm releases Episode IX.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
