Star Wars Director J.J. Abrams Admits ‘There’s More To The Story’ Of Rey’s Origin

There's been a lot of interest surrounding Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parentage ever since the Jakku orphan first appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While director Rian Johnson turned the Star Wars hero's parents in nobodies in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a lot of fans are still holding on to the hope that J.J. Abrams would retcon Rey's parentage in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Now, the director himself declares that there's more to Rey's parents, hinting that the subject might be revisited in his upcoming Star Wars film.

Speaking in an interview with ABC News (via Slash Film) Abrams was asked whether or not fans are going to get to learn who Rey's parents are in the third and final film of Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy.

"I will say that we knew, going into this, that this movie, it had to be a satisfying conclusion. And we were well aware that that's one of the things that's been out there," Abrams explained, "I don't want to say that what happens in Episode 8 [didn't happen]. We have honored that. But I will say that there's more to the story than you've seen."

It seems like the filmmaker is hesitant about retconning what The Last Jedi has already established, though the comment also suggests that Abrams might be thinking of a work around for the subject of Rey's origin. It would be such a shame though if Abrams decides to undo Johnson's work and turn Rey into a Skywalker, Kenobi, or any other legacy character – after all, there is something to love in the fact that even nobodies can become heroes in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy. But then again, some fans would have it the other way around.

What do you think? Should Rey be turned into a legacy character?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
