The final season of The Clone Wars pretty much tied up everything about the series but it also had some fans of Star Wars Rebels scratching their heads. Interestingly, Season 7 may have revealed that Rex lied to Kanan about how his Inhibitor chip was removed. Luckily, Dave Filoni has given an explanation as to why Rex would do such a thing.
In Rebels, Rex told Kanan that he extracted the chip before Order 66 was executed. However, it was revealed in The Clone Wars Season 7 that Ahsoka Tano was the one who took the chip out using the Force. In addition to that, Order 66 was already in full swing by the time the chip was removed. But as Filoni explained to Nerdist, Rex's version of the story might be the way he wants to remember it.
"I think when you reach [Rex] in Rebels and he says, 'I took out my control chip' to Kanan as a way of explaining that we all can make a choice," Filoni said. "I think he sees that as true and I think it's one way that he's coped with things. He did get it removed. Kanan doesn't need to know the minute details of Rex's life."
Filoni continued by stating that fans could "get hung up on continuity so much that you don't actually tell a story that's about real people." He then states that this was the way that Rex was hoping to be understood.
"Rex at that moment tells Kanan the point of view Kanan needs to understand who Rex is and what he's really about. Later on, do they have a scene where they get into the truth of it that was a lot scarier? Probably, but I think Kanan also knows that," Filoni continued.
It seems like an acceptable explanation considering the horrors that Rex and Ahsoka went through in The Clone Wars. Either way, the important thing is the chip was removed and both of them managed to survive Order 66.
