Obi-Wan Kenobi star Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader might have had a hand in the death of Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu back in Revenge of the Sith, but the actor agrees with the fan theories saying that Mace Windu did not truly die.
During Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) joins and follows the dark side teachings of the Sith Lord Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), cutting Windu’s hand before Darth Sidious throws the electrocuted Mace to his death.
But Samuel L. Jackson has argued that the powerful Jedi Master is still alive. In a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused's Josh Horowitz, Jackson states, "There's a huge history of people with one hand returning in Star Wars."
When Christensen was asked about Jackson’s theory during an interview by MTV News for the finale of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Christensen responded, "If Sam Jackson wants it to be true, I wouldn't want to disagree with that."
But Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi and starred opposite Christensen and Jackson in the Star Wars prequels, doubts that even Mace Windu could survive his encounter with Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith.
"No. No. I don't think so," McGregor said in a previous interview with Screen Rant when he was asked about the popular fan theory that Windu is still alive. "Is he? No, no, no."
When Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) was pointed out to be similarly believed dead before his return in The Mandalorian series and The Book of Boba Fett, McGregor replied, "Anything is possible. It's not for me to say, really. I can be cheating someone out of a sequel. No, I don't think so. I think he went out that window, and it was a long way up."
Jackson has insisted that Mace Windu survived the fatal fall for a long time, written as such in George Lucas’ script for Revenge of the Sith: "As blue rays engulf his body, he is flung out the window and falls twenty stories to his death. No more screams. No more moans."
"Of course he is [alive]! Jedi can fall from amazing distances," Jackson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2016. "And there's a long history of one-handed Jedi. So why not?" The actor also confirmed Lucas, who sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, gave his blessing for Jackson to one day return to the Star Wars universe.
"George doesn't have anything to do with [Star Wars] anymore," he said. "George is like, 'I'm okay with that. You can be alive.'"
