With the reveal of Asajj Ventress' return in the upcoming third season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, there have been some questions about whether Dark Disciple is still part of the official canon.

The 2015 novel famously depicted Asajj's demise. She was killed off by Count Dooku after she managed to redeem her partner and love interest Quinlan Vos, who turned into the dark side.

Now that the character is somewhat making her return, it opens a mystery regarding the circumstance of her surprise comeback and whether it removes Dark Disciple from the official canon of the franchise.

Dark Disciple is written by award-winning author Christie Golden and first published by Del Rey in 2015. It is considered to be part of the official Star Wars canon, which was established by Lucasfilm after Disney acquired the studio.

The story of the novel originated as an eight-episode arc for The Clone Wars. However, they were not produced as TV episodes due to the show's cancellation.

It was designated as part of The Clone Wars Legacy, a multimedia project to release unproduced scripts from the animated series in various formats. Dark Disciple was one of the first entries under the banner.

There is no doubt that Asajj Ventress' upcoming return in the third season of The Bad Batch could result in some conflict with the canon timeline since the series is supposedly set after the events of Dark Disciple.

However, in an interview with StarWars.com following the release of the trailer, The Bad Batch executive producer and supervising director Brad Rau assured fans that the character's return will be in alignment with the novel.

"We love Asajj Ventress. She’s a character that we’ve been wanting to tell more stories about," he said.

"We don't want to spoil anything, but want fans to know that any new storytelling with Ventress will align with the events of Star Wars: Dark Disciple."

Based on Rau's words, it looks like the novel is still part of the canon since the character's return won't cause any conflict to its events and the team behind the series intends to respect what was established before.

It is interesting to see now how it all plays out and whether the character's return will indeed align with the novel.
