Lucasfilm has finally released the trailer for the upcoming third and final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch. The preview gave us our first look at the titular group's next adventure as well as the returning characters that will be involved in their missions.

Some of the notable characters that were spotted in the trailer are Phee Genoa, Emperor Palpatine, Fennec Shand, and Cad Bane, who all made appearances in the previous two seasons.

However, near the end of the trailer, they revealed that Clone Wars fan-favorite character Asajj Ventress is also set to appear in the final season even though she's supposed to have died during the timeline of the series.

While fans are delighted to see the character again, they are also wondering about why she is somewhat involved in the action and whether they are retconning her death.

Asajj Ventress' Surprise Return Explained by Star Wars: The Bad Batch Executive Producer

In an article that was published in StarWars.com, Star Wars: The Bad Batch executive producer and supervising director Brad Rau explained Asajj Ventress' shocking return in the upcoming third season.

While he didn't reveal any spoiler details regarding the circumstances of her appearance, he assured the fans that it wouldn't have any conflict with the events of Dark Disciple.

"We love Asajj Ventress. She’s a character that we’ve been wanting to tell more stories about," Rau said.

"We don't want to spoil anything, but want fans to know that any new storytelling with Ventress will align with the events of Star Wars: Dark Disciple."

It is interesting to see how it will all play out in the series given that it is set after the events of the aforementioned novel and bringing her back will create some issues in aligning with the canon of the universe.

The only possible explanation for now is that her scenes are part of flashback sequences or the character will perhaps be brought back through the magic of the Nightsisters. There are several possibilities that they can certainly play with.

The third and final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch will premiere with three episodes this February 21 on Disney+.
