Star Wars Could Be About to Break Its Own Universe With Upcoming Series

Ahsoka (2023) recently had its first trailer, thanks to last weekend's epic Star Wars Celebration in London, and it has already broken the Internet. But is the upcoming Mando-Verse series also set to break the Star Wars universe?

Straight off the bat, the trailer for Ahsoka, which will serve as a live-action sequel to the animated show Star Wars: Rebels (2014), features a ton of references to the "World Between Worlds", the mystical dimension where time and space do not exist as seen in the Season 4 episode of the same name. So it begs to question whether or not the upcoming live-action series will lean into some form of time travel, just like Rebels did.

As we now know, Ahsoka will revolve around the continued search for Jedi Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), who has been missing since the Season 4 finale, some 10 years before Ahsoka takes place. Exactly how the World Between Worlds might fit into this is unclear, as it's more than likely that Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) will be looking for the purrgil - the whale-like creatures that move through deep space and can jump into their own form of hyperspace, which have already been teased in The Mandalorian Season 3. After all, this is how Ezra went missing in the first place. Another clue as to Ezra's whereabouts would be Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen will be reprising his role), who disappeared with Ezra all those years ago but can be seen briefly in the new trailer.

Either way, should the World Between Worlds play a part in Ahsoka, then it's entirely possible we could be looking at some major changes for the Star Wars universe. It's extremely unlikely this concept would be used to reset the franchise in any way a' la JJ Abrams' Star Trek (2009), but it is possible that it will be used to open a Star Wars "multiverse", which has quickly become a very popular trend in film nowadays, particularly within the superhero genre.

Is it possible we'll see a new timeline being opened up in Ahsoka? The idea of time travel existing within Star Wars might seem far-fetched to some, but seeing as we've already seen it in Rebels, anything is possible.

One thing's for certain, though - it won't be used to wipe the widely-hated Sequel Trilogy films from canon like many have been praying for since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) was released four years ago, as a brand-new Sequel-era movie with Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey Skywalker was also announced during Star Wars Celebration.

As per Disney and Lucasfilm, here's the official trailer for Ahsoka:
