Star Wars Comic Explains Why Leia Didn't Hug Chewie in the End of The Force Awakens

Plot holes in Star Wars films have been existing way before The Last Jedi, and the canon has always been there to try and explain everything to the audience. One gripe that people have with The Force Awakens is that Leia ends up hugging Rey instead of Chewbacca in the end, and the comic Age of Resistance: Rey #1 has explained why Leia decided to forgo her moment with Han's best friend.

As it turns out, she was aware that Chewie would be hugging her for a while, so she decided to hold off on it until later:

It's a silly ret-con, but that's kind of what the comics and expanded universe are full of. At least a lot of fans can put that issue to rest; as well as director J.J. Abrams who had admitted that he thought it was a mistake on his part that Leia didn't give Chewie a hug at the end of his film.

Some people think that it was weird that Leia would hug Rey, seeing that she hadn't met her before that moment, but I thought that it was just a show of their connection with the Force, and Leia could feel that Rey was grieving over the loss of Han just like she was.

For now, it looks like Leia will take on the mentor role for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and it's rumored that she's the one training Rey in the forest scenes from the preview. Though I think it's great Leia has a more important role, I'm not expecting too much of a substantial role. After all, Leia's entire bit in TROS comes from recycled footage of Carrie Fisher from the past two films.

Catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20. Age of Resistance: Rey #1 is now available.
