Star Wars Barbie Collection Announced by Mattel

Star Wars Barbies! We are getting a Star Wars Barbie collection from Mattel inspired by Star Wars: A New Hope, which makes sense since that is the first film in the franchise. This might seem odd at first since A New Hope doesn't have a lot of notable female characters outside of Princess Leia but Mattel has decided to take some liberties in a pretty creative way.

The first three Barbie dolls are Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and R2-D2. Now we know what you're thinking: how can there be a Barbie of R2-D2? It's easy enough to gender-swap Darth Vader but making a droid that doesn't have human features into a Barbie doll is pretty weird. Mattel has decided to go with the obvious route by making the R2-D2 and Darth Vader Barbies wear clothes inspired by these characters.

Also, did the R2-D2 Barbie turn C-3PO into a purse? That is messed up Mattel, what the heck?!

It seems like this is only the first of many, with future dolls likely taking inspiration from the original trilogy before moving forward with the prequels and the current trilogy, which will finally end this December. In fact, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Rey get a Barbie, though she could already have one and this writer is just oblivious to that fact.

While I won't be picking these up personally, these would be a great gift for any young fan interested in Star Wars and Barbies. There was a time when these two wouldn't mix well but times have changed and it's nice seeing crossovers like this.

Each Star Wars Barbie is $100 and can now be ordered.
