Star Wars Actor Oscar Isaac Reveals He Almost Passed On Poe Dameron Role In TFA

It's hard to imagine anybody other than Oscar Isaac playing Poe Dameron in the new Star Wars trilogy. However, Isaac has just revealed that he almost missed out on starring in Star Wars: The Force Awakens because of a hilarious prank.

In an interview with GQ, Isaac revealed that he got a mysterious phone call confirming a meeting with The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams. Interestingly, the caller wasn't who they said they were.

"I was doing A Most Violent Year, and I found out that J.J. wanted to meet with me for a part, and that I needed to fly to Paris. I remember, I actually still have the voice message saved, 'cause I remember in between shooting I got a message from an unknown caller, and it was a voice, it was like, 'Hey Oscar, it's J.J. Ya know, you don't have to come all the way out to Paris. What're you gonna do, play a droid? You don't need to be doing that. Actually, this is Albert Brooks.' 'Cause Albert was in the movie, so he really had me going for a second there, and I'm very happy that I still have that voice message."

It's an awesome prank but we're glad Isaac wasn't dissuaded by Brooks' prank call. Instead, he went on to play Leia Organa's most trusted pilot who was initially meant to get killed off in Episode VII. However, Abrams decided that Isaac's portrayal of the character was too good and rewrote Poe's fate. This is certainly a great thing since we get to see more of Isaac next year.

Isaac will return as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: Episode IX, which is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.
