Star Wars Actor John Boyega Strikes Deal With Netflix

It looks like John Boyega's off to do other projects now that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's closed the curtain on the Skywalker saga.

According to a report by Variety, Boyega is partnering with Netflix to develop non-English movies centered around West and East Africa. The British-Nigerian actor has an indie outfit called the UpperRoom Productions which looks to "develop film projects based on stories, cast, characters, crew, literary properties, mythology, screenplays, and/or other elements in or around African countries." Now, thanks to this new deal with Netflix, the UpperRoom Productions gets to develop these sorts of films.

This is pretty big news, one that marks Netflix's increasing stake in original African content.

"Africa has a rich history in storytelling, and for Netflix, this partnership with John and UpperRoom presents an opportunity to further our investment in the continent while bringing unique African stories to our members both in Africa and around the world," Netflix VP of international film David Kosse said.

Netflix has just recently been launching African original series. It's first original, Queen Sono, a six-part drama, was released on February 28. The streaming giant has other shows coming in as well. There's Blood and Water, a South African teen drama, and the African animated series, Mama K's Team 4. Both shows are set to premiere later this year.

Now, Netflix has Boyega's production outfit to help produce more African original content.

"I am thrilled to partner with Netflix to develop a slate of non-English language feature films focused on African stories, and my team and I are excited to develop original material," Boyega said, "We are proud to grow this arm of our business with a company that shares our vision."

It looks like Boyega has a bright future ahead of him outside of the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on Digital HD on March 17 and on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K Ultra HD on March 31.
