Star Wars: 11 Shows Planned for Next Several Years

There is no doubt that the Disney+ series The Mandalorian reignited the Star Wars franchise. After all, during Disney's Investors Day presentation last December 2020, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that they are currently working on numerous Star Wars series for the streaming service.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, along with the news regarding The Book of Boba Fett's premiere date, they also mentioned that Disney and Lucasfilm are apparently working on 11 shows for the next several years. It is unclear though if the number counts for both live-action and animated projects. Nevertheless, eleven is still an exciting amount of Star Wars goodness to look forward to.

Based on our count, there are seven upcoming Star Wars shows that have been officially announced by Lucasfilm. Those titles are The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Acolyte, Ahsoka, Lando, and Rangers of the New Republic. Although Variety reported that the latter is currently no longer in active development so we are unsure if that project is still counted. Either way, that means there are around 4 to 5 Star Wars TV projects that haven't been announced yet by Lucasfilm.

This also shows that television is the future of Star Wars. After the release of The Rise of Skywalker, there have been questions about the future of the franchise since it is known as a theatrical commodity. The Mandalorian proved that the franchise still has a life, now through television. The fan responses to the first two seasons have been enthusiastic and it shows that they are invested in seeing Star Wars told through long-form storytelling. In addition, more Star Wars shows also mean more content for Disney+. This is their way to add more subscribers and maintain interest in the service with all the premium content that they have.
