Star Trek: Picard just concluded its first season which featured tons of twists and unexpected reveals. However, even the most shocking scene in the finale episode got Sir Patrick Stewart surprised as well.

This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard finale, "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2."

The show had a season-long subplot of Jean-Luc's fatal illness which has claimed the life of the beloved character in the finale. Though this has finally taken a toll on Picard's organic life, he wakes up in a simulation where his mind is housed. Picard's consciousness is now transferred to a new synthetic body, which Altan Soong calls the "Golem." From now on, the character will continue his journey as Android Picard.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stewart revealed that he was surprised to learn about his character's fate in the first season. "I only learned of [Picard's death] way into [shooting] the first season," he said. "Because that final episode wasn't written yet, and I didn't know it was part of the storyline."

The actor even joked about how he had a brief moment while the shoot was heading to the finale. "There was a moment where I thought: ‘Oh, Lord, am I being killed off?'" he said. "‘ What did I do wrong?'"

Although it was a totally unexpected way for the character to be revived immediately, fans are just happy with the thought of seeing more of Stewart's adventures as Picard.

Star Trek: Picard is now streaming for free on CBS Access for a limited time only.
