Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Showrunner Explains the Lack of Deanna Troi

The third season of Star Trek: Picard has been deemed as The Next Generation reunion season and, as of the recent episode, all principal characters have now appeared as they're heading into the final batch of episodes. However, Marina Sirtis' character Deanna Troi hasn't made a lot of screentime compared to the others.

So far, she only appeared through a flashback and video call appearance during the earlier parts of the season. The character's most prominent screentime so far was during the end of the sixth episode when they revealed that Vadic and her crew have also kidnapped her aside from William Riker.

A lot of fans have been wondering whether Troi will still have a major role in the season as we're now heading to the last three episodes and there are hopes that she will have a major contribution to the incoming climactic battle in The Next Generation crew's final adventure.

Recently, showrunner Terry Matalas addressed the lack of Deanna Troi in the current season on Twitter when he responded to a fan who expressed their sentiment about the character's glaring lack of screen time.

Matalas explained that the actress' minimal screen time in the season was due to scheduling issues since she lives in London. He also promised that there are a lot of exciting moments to come surrounding her character for the rest of the season.

"Trek Twitter, you sure do make it difficult some days. We did not forget about Marina. She lives in London & schedules are difficult. She plays big in the final 3. I’m sure this won’t be enough for some but we are very excited for the Troi moments to come," he tweeted.

In another response to a fan, Matalas also hinted that Troi might be the "key" to the mystery behind the season which supports his promise that the character will still be a significant part of the later episodes. He wrote, "Troi is vital to the season. She might even be the key to all of it."

We now have assurance from the showrunner himself that Troi is still going to be a major presence in the last three episodes of the season. After all, they are aware that the character is a prominent player within The Next Generation crew and there is also an arc that they have to address between her and Riker.

It is interesting to see what kind of role will the character play in the rest of the season and what kind of "key" she has as Matalas suggested. Most importantly, it is will be exciting to see how she'll interact with her former colleagues in the USS Enterprise.
