The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard was a huge success amongst critics and fans alike. It became the first modern Star Trek series to make it to the top 10 ratings chart and one of the most acclaimed seasons in the franchise's history.

A lot of fans are now petitioning for a potential spinoff titled Star Trek: Legacy with Jeri Ryan returning as Captain Seven of Nine, especially since the final episode planted the seeds for what the follow-up series could explore.

So far, we haven't heard any news or updates whether the spinoff is indeed going to happen and now one of the producers have chimed in on the conversation.

Speaking recently with CinemaBlend, Star Trek: Picard co-creator and executive producer Akiva Goldsman shared his thoughts regarding the fan petition on Star Trek: Legacy where he threw his support on the idea and praised showrunner Terry Matalas' work on the third season.

"Well, I think what Terry did with Season 3 is so extraordinary, and I think that the appetite for it is, I think, undeniable. So certainly, I am a huge advocate of some version of that continuing. It was so spectacular, I think, what he did," he said.

"And so, you know, right now, there's no pitching of anything. Right now the world is, uh, shut down [due to writer's strike]. But, you know, I would really hope– let me put it like this: I signed the petition [for Star Trek: Legacy] too."

As Goldsman pointed out, we won't be hearing any news or updates at the moment on whether the spinoff will happen due to the ongoing Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike as writers are forbidden to make deals with the studio.

It is great to hear that someone like him supports the idea since he could help make the project happen as the executive producer of two Star Trek shows and convince Paramount+ to consider it as part of the franchise's slate.

For now, let's just wait and see how this will all unfold and, due to the ongoing strike, it might take a while before we'll know whether this ends up happening or not.
