Star Trek: Lower Decks Creator Talks the One Thing They Can't Joke About on the Show

Star Trek: Lower Decks looks like a fun enough show but it's also one that's likely being done due to the popularity of shows like Rick and Morty or even, God forbid, Family Guy. Still, fans are looking forward to a much lighter version of this universe and are hoping for some cool jokes that can be told around the Trek lore.

What some might not know is that creator Mike Mahan has free reign over what can be done in this show but isn't allowed to make fun of one thing; Star Trek.

That's right, the number one rule when it comes to writing jokes about Lower Decks is to not punch down the concept of Star Trek itself. Despite the fact that this show will have some dark and gory jokes, it won't mock fans for liking Star Trek, with Mahan insisting to CNET that there will be no jokes about being a Trekkie. It's an interesting stance and one we didn't expect from a former Rick and Morty writer.

Mahan also discussed a number of interesting bits about the show, like why it's set during The Next Generation, which is when Patrick Stewart's Picard was in charge. You can tell that Mahan is a really big fan of the franchise and we're hoping that he makes this show a little more interesting than your typical adult cartoon.

I mean, we aren't expecting Bojack Horseman but it can be a bit deeper than Family Guy, right?

Star Trek: Lower Decks will debut later this week on August 6. All 10 episodes will be released weekly, every Tuesday.
