Star Trek Legend George Takei Says Getting Sulu Role was 'Life-Changing'

There is little doubt that landing the role of Lt. Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series was a huge thing for George Takei. After all, it made him a household name and endeared him to millions of Trekkies around the world. However, Takei has revealed that there is a different reason why he considers playing Sulu as "life-changing."

Takei recently spoke to The Guardian where he answered several questions about his personal life. Not surprisingly, the star of The Terror: Infamy admitted that joining Star Trek changed his life.

"Getting cast as Lt Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek was life-changing," Takei said before pointing out that the man who created Star Trek is the primary reason for that.

"The show's creator, Gene Roddenberry, told me the idea was a metaphor for the fact that the earth's strength lay in its diversity; people from all over the world, working out their problems and being a team – and boldly going where no one had gone before," Takei said.

We're loving the idea that Roddenberry had that in mind when he created Star Trek. Indeed, the characters in the original series were so diverse but they all worked together perfectly. Needless to say, we're glad that Takei landed the role.

But what are the chances that Takei will return as Sulu in the future? It was previously reported that Takei already has an awesome pitch for a possible Sulu-centered spin-off. Hopefully, we'll get an update on that at the upcoming Star Trek Day virtual event.

Takei is scheduled to attend the Star Trek Day virtual event on September 8.
