Warning: if you haven't seen Star Trek: Discovery Season 3's new episode yet, this news contains major spoilers so read at your own risk!
The latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery was filled with all the goodies every Trekkie in existence would be thrilled about and the people behind the hit CBS All Access series pulled out the big guns as "Unification III" marked the emotional return of an iconic Star Trek character and I'm pretty sure if you've been following the franchise all these years, you had been expecting this cameo appearance.
As the title implies, "Unification III" directly follows the established plots in the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter titled "Unification I" and "Unification II". The said classic episodes marked the 25th anniversary of the beloved Sci-Fi franchise back in 1991 and almost three decades later, for its third installment, Discovery featured a cameo appearance from Leonard Nimoy's Spock.
"Unification III" revolves around Michael Burnham's mission to Vulcan (now renamed Nevarr) in an attempt to convince the government to release data that could aid her in pinpointing the source of the Burn. In one sequence from the episode, Michael is seen researching Spock's mission to bring the Vulcans and Romulans together. She later unearths a clip of Spock speaking.
The episode also fulfills Spock's lifelong dream of having Vulcans and Romulans become a unified society. The series' future setting allowed for that to happen.
Without a doubt, the latest Star Trek: Discovery episode was a fitting tribute to Leonard Nimoy who passed away in 2015. I'm pretty sure longtime Trekkies loved the heck out of this episode and most certainly, good old Spock is smiling down from paradise after witnessing "Unification III".
Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is now streaming on CBS All Access.
