Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green on How Series Actively Denounces Racism

It might still be a long wait for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 but there's one thing that fans can be assured of. The CBS All Access series will continue to actively denounce racism and Sonequa Martin-Green revealed how the show will do so.

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently spoke to The Salt Lake Tribune where he stated that the franchise is all about diversity without making a big deal out of it.

"I think that we all feel Star Trek is a larger mission than just making great entertainment," said Kurtzman. "Gene Roddenberry's greatest contribution to the conversation of diversity in the future is that diversity is never addressed in Star Trek."

This is especially true with Discovery, which introduced Martin-Green's character as the lead but never addressed her color. According to the former Walking Dead star, the show simply accepts all races without any fanfare.

"What Gene originally envisioned is being carried out today," Martin-Green said. "We are going further with the representation. ... We have this franchise that has always been built on innovation, and we are continuing to do that."

Martin-Green continued by stating that Discovery sees each character as a whole.

"It's not just about seeing people of color," she said. "It's not just about seeing a Black woman as the lead. It's not just about seeing an Asian female captain. It's about seeing these people be well-rounded and strong and integral to the group, and that's the representation that changes people's beliefs and can therefore change the world."

This is something that is truly important in the world today and we're glad that Discovery will continue to go further in the future.

Star Trek: Discovery has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
