Star Trek: Discovery serves as the seventh series in one of the longest-running science fiction franchises. However, like pretty much anything else, all good things must come to an end.

What makes the series' fifth season's ending heartbreaking is not its finale, but because the showrunners weren't aware that Paramount+ canceled season 6 after they had already wrapped up season 5's filming.

"[Season 5] actually is a very complete story that has the benefit of also feeling like it's about endings," executive producer Alex Kurtzman told ScreenRant, "And that wasn't really intentional, but the studio did allow us to come in [and] do a coda."

Kurtzman added that they are satisfied with how they ended the series, in a way that "nothing's really left dangling" as they were given the chance to do a couple of reshoots, despite finishing up on November 20, 2022.

Similarly, co-showrunner Michelle Paradise explained on IGN that they didn't go into season 5's script convinced this would be the last for the Paramount+ series.

"Alex and I talked about it," Paradise says, "And in some ways, [season 5] felt like if [the end] were going to happen, this was the right season for that to happen because it feels almost like an ending."

What to Expect From Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 marks the series' final season and it ends with 10 episodes, centering on Captain Michael Burnham (played by Martin-Green) and the U.S.S. Discovery crew's epic adventure across the galaxy for the last time.

Set in the 32nd century, they uncover a mysterious ancient power that leads them on a hunt down with other interested villains to claim the prize for themselves.

The fifth season will also be spotlighting the new duo baddies: Moll and L'ak, aka a "badass interspecies couple" whose romance is akin to star-crossed lovers like Romeo and Juliet and Bonnie and Clyde.
