Star Trek: Discovery Hints at Saru's Return in Season 4

Saru may have left the USS Discovery, but the character is not totally gone. Saru told Su'Kal the Kelpien into leaving his home inside a holographic simulation. Su'Kal was the one who accidentally caused the Burn. Saru told him to leave his home to prevent a second disaster. Saru stepped away as the captain in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 finale, bringing Su'Kal back to Kaminar. His departure as the captain doesn't mean he is gone for good.

After stepping away from the Captain's chair, Saru recommended Michael Burnham to take his place. However, Saru's final Starfleet log was revealed on the Star Trek Logs' Instagram account. It shows that he is eager to reconnect with his home planet. This means that he is already thinking about the prospect of returning to duty.

The log begins with, "My final Starfleet log, for now." Saru's log continues, "I have relinquished command of Discovery so that I may accompany Su'Kal to Kaminar. A difficult decision, to be sure, but I have no doubt it is the right one. Adjusting to life outside the nebula will not be easy for him, especially as the repercussions of the Burn become clear. I will help him acclimate into Kaminar society, ensure he feels safe and cared for, however long that takes, and I know I leave Discovery in excellent hands. Michael is more than a capable officer, she is a dear friend. I have no doubt she will exceed all expectations as Captain. I cannot deny that I am quite eager to rediscover my home world… and I am also comforted knowing that when I am ready to return to the stars, Discovery will be there. Until then…"

Ahead of the season finale's release, Comicbook.com interviewed the showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, Michelle Paradise. She confirmed that the fans haven't seen the last of Saru, which was played by Doug Jones.

Paradise stated, "Doug Jones is not going anywhere. Saru will be back, a hundred percent in season four. So rest easy, sleep well. We're not letting Doug go anywhere. We're holding onto him."

It can be remembered that Saru became Discover's Captain in the early episodes of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3. At that time, Saru's actor told Comicbook.com that Saru's unique background has helped him lead the Discovery's crew into the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery is available for streaming on CBS All Access.
