Squid Game has continued to dominate Netflix globally, and although the show has not been renewed yet, director Hwang Dong-hyuk already has plans for the upcoming season.

Director Hwang spoke with Radio Times exclusively to address the speculations about Squid Game Season 2. The director teased that Player 001, Oh Il-nam (Oh Yeong-su), will play a massive role despite the character dying in the first season.

Squid Game Season 2 Will Show Player 001's History

In the series, player 001 was too old that he looked vulnerable and weak. Many considered him a liability but his wisdom and experiences helped the group during the tug of war game. Also, the show featured a shocking twist — the vulnerable old man was actually the mastermind of the survival game.

Il-nam had a brain tumor and he died before the show ended. Despite that, Director Hwang teased that Il-nam would still be part of Squid Game Season 2. However, since the character is already dead, he will likely appear in flashbacks to show his past story.

"Oh Il-nam is a man of huge success from nothing. As we see from the phrase ‘the money man', he is a veiled big shot in the financial industry," director Hwang told RadioTimes.com.

"It seems, however, the way how he years for the happy moments of his past shows that he has lost many things including his family and his humanity at the cost of success. If there will be a season two, we might reveal a little more about his past story."

Il-nam also felt what seemed to be an instant liking to Gi-hun. He even called him "friend." Also, he invited Gi-hun to be with him on the day he was dying. Gi-hun was there to witness his last breath.

All throughout the nine episodes, there were lots of clues implying their relationship being father and son. So, showing Il-nam's past history might confirm his relationship with Gi-hun.
