Squid Game Season 2 has not been confirmed by Netflix, but the overnight success of the Korean drama is more than enough reason to convince us that it’s only a matter of time before an announcement is made.
However, releasing Squid Game Season 2 could be quite tricky because the writers need to come up with an equally compelling story as with Season 1.
Since audiences already know Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-Jae), Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-Joon), and the other characters and their backstories are all about, these storylines could no longer be explored in Squid Game Season 2.
But, there’s one character from Squid Game Season 1 that fans know very little about, and that’s Front Man Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hun).
Who Is Front Man Hwang In-Ho?
In the first nine episodes of Squid Game, very little was revealed about the mysterious character other than that he’s Jun-ho’s missing brother.
In-ho participated in The Game in 2015 and won. So, it’s unclear why he decided to return to the competition and head it alongside Old Man Il Nam (Yeong-Su Oh).
Now that Il Nam is dead (or so we thought?), there’s plenty of backstories to play around with for the Front Man.
All those that participated in the recent game are individuals struggling to pay their debts. So, this means that In-ho also had obligations that he wanted to settle several years back.
But unlike Gi-hun, who wanted to end the games, In-ho had a very different response to it. He even killed his younger brother to ensure that he wouldn’t expose The Game to the police.
So many theories have been circulating online with regards to In-ho and Jun-ho’s relationship. There are also speculations suggesting that the latter could still be alive.
After all, it’s possible that In-ho knew in his heart that his brother would find him. And this is his only escape from The Game. However, he cannot just leave on a whim without putting himself and his brother’s life at risk.
So, if Jun-ho faked his death, it’s possible that he and the Front Man could be working together secretly.
Additionally, audiences want to know what kind of relationship the brothers had growing up because this will help them understand In-ho and Jun-ho’s capabilities.
If the brothers are very close, then the theory that Jun-ho faked his death to ensure that In-ho will be safe makes a lot of sense.
Squid Game Director Talks About Season 2
During a recent interview, director Hwang Dong-Hyuk also said that if Netflix will greenlight Squid Game Season 2, he wants to focus more on the other side of The Game.
This means that he will be exploring the stories of the Front Man, the guards, the VIPs, and everyone else that oversee the deadly games.
“If I do get to do one — one would be the story of the Frontman [a former cop who now oversees the game]. I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news. This was an issue that I wanted to raise. Maybe in season 2, I can talk about this more,” he said.
Is There Hope For Squid Game Season 3?
While it’s still too early to even think of Squid Game Season 3, we can’t help it. The Korean drama didn’t become the highest-grossing show for Netflix for nothing.
But the only way for Squid Game to be renewed for a third season is if the director and the writers can give their stories variation.
If Squid Game was all about Gi-hun and the contestants, Season 2 must be a prequel to explore the Front Man’s backstory. Writing Season 2 as a prequel about the Front Man paves the way for the director and writers to have a chance for Season 3.
Based on Dong-Hyuk’s recent statement about the Front Man’s life in Season 2, a prequel indeed seems like a possibility. And Squid Game Season 3 could focus on an entirely different storyline or character that has yet to be introduced on the show.
