Squid Game Makes Impressive Record At Gotham Awards 2021

Squid Game is not stopping its legacy that easily the hit Netflix series remains one of the top recipients of different award-giving bodies.

The South Korean series that waited for years before Hellbound dethroned it. In comparison, Squid Game raked 111 million viewers worldwide as of October 13, while the new hit topped 80 countries in just 24 hours.

Flixpatrol analytics revealed that Hellbound took over the streaming platform by storm. Although Squid Game, the instant world phenomenon, is no longer the most-watched series, it successfully scored one more milestone for its cast and creators.

Squid Game Wins Big At Gotham Awards 2021

On Monday, Squid Game actors Lee Jung Jae and Jung Ho Yeon joined director Hwang Dong-Hyuk and Kim Ji Yeon at the 2021 Gotham Awards in New York. The team attended the event after the hit series got a nomination for Breakthrough Series – Over 40 Minutes and Lee Jung Jae for Outstanding Performance in a New Series.

They did not go home empty-handed as Squid Game won the award, becoming the first Korean drama to win at the respective event.

While receiving the award, director Hwang Dong-Hyuk shared the story of the series' journey again; how it went through a lot since he wrote the script in 2009 and got rejected multiple times.

"People said it's unrealistic, it's too violent, it's absurd, it's weird. It took 12 years to make this show and show it to the people. And it took less than 12 days to become the No. 1 show on the planet." He continued, "If there's a miracle, this is a miracle. It happened to me. The only thing I can say is thank you. Thank you for watching it, and thank you for loving it," he went on.

Meanwhile, Lee Jung Jae was not able to win the category and lost the award to The Good Lord Bird's Ethan Hawke and The Underground Railroad's Thuso Mbedu.

Other Awards Squid Game Can Bring Home So Far

After Squid Game won at the Gotham Awards, the Korean series might potentially bring home its current nomination, as well.

So far, Hwang Dong Hyuk-directed series is also up to score People's Choice Awards' Bingeworthy Show Of The Year. It competes against Cobra Kai, Loki, Mare of Easttown, Outer Banks, Sex/Life, Ted Lasso, and The White Lotus.

Meanwhile, it also got nominated for Drama Program at the Rose d'Or but lost the chance to Channel 4's Help.

As the Squid Game fever continues, fans can expect more awards to arrive in the next few weeks.
