Squid Game Creator Plans to Do Localized Versions of the Show in Other Countries

Squid Game took the world by the storm it premiered on Netflix last year and its gigantic success led to numerous plans to expand the franchise with a second season and a reality show where real-life people can play the games that were featured in the show. However, it looks like we may see it expanding even further and making its jump to other countries outside Korea.

In a recent interview with Deadline, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk was asked if he has plans to expand the franchise to other countries and he revealed that he is indeed considering the idea of possibly doing localized versions of the show in other countries. He pointed out that the idea was already highlighted in one of the scenes involving the VIPs during the first season.

"I wrote the script in a way to hint that the Squid Game was happening in other parts of the world," Hwang said. "As you can see from the conversations that the VIPs are having, they say the Korean game this year is spectacular, which means that there are other games as well. So this was also intended, because I thought that if the show did well, I wanted to expand the universe further, so that other countries could have their own version of the Squid Game."

It is interesting to hear that Hwang is considering the idea of expanding the concept of the series to other countries and exploring what their versions of Squid Game look like. After all, each culture/country has its own local games that children usually play and can put a Squid Game twist with it.

It would be curious to see whether Hwang's plans will end up happening. Considering that the show made a huge splash worldwide, we can guess that it's an idea that Netflix will definitely consider and would like to explore as well since they're also trying to appeal in each market.

If Netflix pushes through with their idea, it wouldn't be the first time that they'll do a localized version of their hit show since they did it before with the South Korean adaptation of the Spanish series Money Heist which premiered last June.
