What’s the Deal With Spy x Family’s Designer Chairs?

There are many reasons why Spy x Family is so popular. The story and characters are great, but perhaps we need to spend more time appreciating the series’ style itself? For a start, what’s the inspiration behind Spy x Family’s chairs that feature so prominently on the manga covers?

Spy x Family has a lot of different influences, many of them from Cold War Europe when the story is spiritually set. Loid and Yor and the rest of the characters are all super stylish, helping to create a truly European aesthetic that is easy to fall in love with.

Why Do Chairs Feature on Spy x Family Manga Covers?

There’s no specific reason as to why the chairs first featured on Spy x Family covers. However, each chair since is and is seen as a representation of the character featured.

At the start, the chairs may have just been an extension of the manga’s style. Spy x Family is praised for its great aesthetics and art style, so you can imagine they wanted a stylish cover to accompany this.

The Spy x Family manga author Tatsuya Endo has Tweeted previously that he put a lot of thought into which chairs would be used for each character in later volumes:

Each chair seen on Spy x Family manga covers is said to represent the character seated.

All the chairs are also real, albeit ones that you might not find in most houses. Most of them were created around the time of Spy x Family’s setting, evoking the atmosphere of the series.
