Spider-Man Writer David Koepp Opens Up About Scrapped Plans for Trilogy

There might have been a whole lot of Spider-Man iterations over the years, however, the Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire remain some of Hollywood's most defining films focused on Marvel's favorite wall-crawler.

Unfortunately, while Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi's names often take to the center whenever the original Spider-Man trilogy comes into discussion, the movies owed a lot to writer David Koepp (who had also written Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible). Surprisingly, it seems like the screenwriter had more Spider-Man ideas and he had the opportunity to bring them to the big screen in Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man reboot.

Speaking in an interview with Collider to promote his new movie, You Should Have Left, Koepp was asked about his work on superhero movies. The writer then opened up about his unused Spider-Man ideas.

"There was a time maybe seven or eight years ago when I was gonna come back for a couple Spider-Man movies, after they'd done their first Amazing Spider-Man," Koepp told the entertainment news outlet, "On the very first Spider-Man I sort of planned out what I thought the first three movies should be, and then all the assorted personalities it didn't work for me to keep writing the Spider-Man movies…"

Koepp was excited to come back and finish the story that he started telling in the first Spider-Man movie by Raimi, but then, he decided that the moment had passed and that there wasn't any point in trying to recreate what he did.

Interestingly enough, Koepp's vision for Garfield's franchise was quite different from what came to fruition in the trilogy by Sam Raimi.

"Basically [my trilogy idea] was the telling of the Gwen Stacey/Harry Osbourne story but I spaced everything out differently," Koepp said. "I wanted Gwen to be killed in the middle of the second movie, because that follows sort of the Empire Strikes Back model, and I had different villains I wanted to use. Just a different way to tell that story."

Koepp really had a different plan for Spider-Man. Such a shame that it didn't really push through. Now, Marvel is developing a third Spider-Man movie, this time starring Tom Holland.

Phase 4 of the MCU begins when Black Widow premieres on November 6, 2020.
