Spider-Man PS4: Marvel Originally Disapproved This Major Moment

Spider-Man fans had a marvelous 2018, with both Marvel's Spider-Man aka Spider-Man PS4 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse showing everyone different takes on the wallcrawler, we don't normally see. The video game, in particular, wasn't just a very good open-world title but a stellar Spider-Man story that had a lot of moments we wouldn't normally see in the comic books, including a death that stirred many to tears.

This is why it's surprising, or perhaps unsurprising, that Marvel originally wanted to axe this death.

SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN PS4

Fans were absolutely shocked when Peter couldn't save Aunt May in the end, forced to use the antidote for research to save everyone in New York instead of saving her. Before her death, May told Peter that she knew he was Spider-Man for a long time and told him that saving everyone else was the right thing to do.

Yuri Lowenthal, the man who voiced Spider-Man in the game, mentioned in The GameZone Podcast that Aunt May's death was originally vetoed by Marvel. However, as the game progressed and Marvel witnessed how the story was told, the company eventually gave Insomniac Games their blessing to kill a beloved supporting character.

Lowenthal was very happy that Marvel pushed through with the scene, which the voice actor describes as one of the highlights of his career. It was also a monumental moment for those that played the game since no one expected to cry when finishing this amazing tale.
