Zendaya shared on Interview her interest in directing a film, “The idea of trying to direct in the future excites me. That’s why I’m on set so much. When I’m not in it, I’m right there trying to learn. I go around and I ask our crew members, “What are you doing today? Can you explain it to me?” Because we’ve got some real vets in the game. So, the hope is that I’ll be able to, one day, make the things that I want to see.”

She sees the directing as an avenue for herself to grow more as an artist, “I just want to do the things that make me happy and bring me joy and fulfill me as an artist, as a person. So, I keep that loose, because if one day it turns into a completely different career path, then I would allow myself to do that.”

When asked to give an example of what she would want to direct, she said, “Like a simple love story about two Black girls. And I don’t want it to be rooted in anything other than just a story about two people falling in love and that’s it. Something simple and beautiful, that leaves you happy and wanting to fall in love yourself.”

She even reflected on being a romantic herself, “Of course. But I also feel I just haven’t seen that without it dealing more with the traumatic side of things—which is really important to talk about, but I would love a coming-of-age story where awkward and funny things happen, just like when any other young person is trying to figure out who they are.”

She also holds confidence and inspiration on being a young Black girl, “Our existence is broad and expansive and beautiful, and to see all the different emotional colors of what it means to be a young Black girl—I would like to see that, because I don’t think I’ve seen many depictions of it.”

Zendaya will be reprising her role as MJ in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home where she stars with Tom Holland as the titular character. She is expected to be the same girl that Peter Parker fell in love with as she sees beyond him as a hero.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will be a game-changer now that the villains from previous Spider-Man movies are coming back to shake the world of Peter Parker now that his identity has been revealed to the public by Mysterio in the end of Far From Home.

The villains include Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Rhys Ifans’ Lizard, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman. They would also be joined by Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Benedict Wong as Wong, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, and Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release on December 17, 2021.
