Dune Receives Best Picture Nomination at the 94th Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the much-anticipated nominations at this year's Academy Awards. The western drama The Power of the Dog led the list with 12 nominations followed by the science-fiction epic Dune which received 10 nominations. West Side Story and Belfast tied for third place as they each got 7 nominations.

Dune managed to earn a Best Picture nomination where it will be competing with other top films of 2021 including Belfast, CODA, Don't Look Up, Drive My Car, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story. The film also garnered nominations in other categories such as Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. However, Denis Villeneuve didn't get a Best Director nomination.

Meanwhile, two MCU films managed to earn a nomination with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home each receiving a nod for Best Visual Effects where it will be competing with other blockbuster films such as Dune, Free Guy, and No Time to Die.

While the MCU only managed to have their films receive a nomination in the visual effects category, some of the actors who starred in the franchise managed to garner a nomination in the acting categories like Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick... Boom!), Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), and J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos). Thor director Kenneth Branagh also managed to earn a Best Director nomination for Belfast.

It is exciting that these films managed to earn a nomination and were recognized by the Academy. Obviously, there were some surprises and snubs but it just shows how competitive this year as there were so many films that are deserving to receive nominations. There were only a few slots to fill so there will always be films that won't make it in the list. Now, the game is on since we know the nominees, and good luck to all of them as they will now move forward to the peak of the awards season.
