Spider-Man: Homecoming Writer Confirms That Uncle Ben Exists In The MCU

Uncle Ben may not have appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming but that doesn't mean he doesn't exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Though there isn't any direct mention of Uncle Ben in Tom Holland's first feature film as Marvel's favorite web-slinger, Homecoming writer John Francis Daley confirms in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the film does a few references to Ben.

Not only does that bit where Peter says "all that she's gone through" also refer to Marisa Tomei's Aunty May losing Ben, but Daley reveals that Peter's homecoming garb was also supposed to be linked to Spider-Man's greatest influence.

"We did talk about there being a scene where [May] references him directly. It was when [Peter] was getting ready for homecoming and the wardrobe she was giving Peter was all Uncle Ben's clothes. It was a nice moment, but we also knew that it veered away from his arc. If you're going to talk about someone's death, you don't want it to be a throwaway."

While Homecoming director Jon Watts did want to avoid creating another Spider-Man origin film for the MCU, it's such a shame that we didn't get to see even one flash back or name drop of Uncle Ben. After all, he's one of the reasons why Peter becomes Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently screening in cinemas.
