Spider-Man: Far From Home Plot is Pretty Predictable, At Least for Now

Yesterday's trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home was pretty good, showing things we've never seen in a Spider-Man movie. We saw Nick Fury recruit Spider-Man for a special mission, four of Spidey's classic villains (in one movie!!!), and Happy Hogan hitting on Aunt May. It looks like a very good follow-up to Homecoming and could be the light MCU installment we all need after Avengers: Endgame makes us all cry our eyes out.

Sadly, if you've ever read a Spider-Man comic book with Mysterio on it, you might have guessed the plot already.

The trailer seems to be framing Mysterio as this epic superhero who is part-Doctor Strange and part-Iron Man in the words of Ned "should be Ganke" Leeds. Those who have read Mysterio's debut on Amazing Spider-Man #13 knows that he tried to pass himself off as a superhero before Spidey foiled his plans and revealed that he was a criminal this whole time. It looks like we can expect something similar for Far From Home.

In the comics, Mysterio is a former special effects artist who decides to use his VFX knowhow to become the star he's always wanted to be, even if it's through criminal deeds. We can assume that he is orchestrating these elemental villains around Europe so that they can worship him as an awesome superhero.

Whether Sandman, Hydro-Man, and Molten Man are illusions or supervillains under his hire isn't known yet, though we might find out in a future trailer. Sony does love spoiling their movies after all.

Honestly, this would be more effective if the public hated Spider-Man as they do in the comics but since most people like Spidey in the MCU, this might be lackluster. Then again, we were all surprised by the quality and twists from Homecoming so Far From Home might also have a few tricks up its sleeve.

Spider-Man: Far From Home comes out on July 5.
