While Spice and Wolf began as a light novel series in February 2006, it became successful enough for a manga adaptation. This version began in September 2007.

Both versions of the story were written by Isuna Hasekura, though they have different illustrators. What’s also different are some elements of the story.

As the original version of the story, the light novel is what many fans recommend reading, as it depicts the events in the most detailed way.

Meanwhile, the manga is said by fans to be worth reading also, though it has a much faster pace. This means it skips out on many character development moments depicted in the light novel.

Despite the changes, the manga’s ending is largely the same as the final chapter of the light novel series.

The Spice and Wolf manga features 99 chapters, along with the finale, which is aptly titled The Final Chapter.

Its ending is similar to the light novel, as Holo and Lawrence get married and settle down together. They then open the Spice and Wolf bathhouse.

Since this ending, the manga has not gotten any new chapters. That’s not the case with the light novel though, as it continues to get new volumes set years after this finale.

These volumes are titled Spring Log, and they feature short stories about Holo and Lawrence’s married life. Plus, there’s the Wolf and Parchment series, which is set after the main story’s events.

Does the New Spice and Wolf Anime Adapt the Manga or Light Novel?

The new Spice and Wolf anime by Passione (of Yuri is My Job and Ishura fame) finally premiered, and as fans expected, it is a remake instead of a continuation of the original anime.

It’s not clear if it’s an adaptation of the light novel or the manga, though it seems to follow the novels more. Not to mention that the first episode’s intro features a reference to the Spring Log volumes.
