Lucasfilm's newly released trailer for Star Wars: The Mandalorian might have wowed fans with its battle sequences from a few bounty hunters, but it turns out that what seemed to be IG-88 actually has nothing to do with the rogue IG-series assassin droid that first appeared in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.
The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau spoke with fans during the 2019 Star Wars Celebration panel for the series and in his discussion with the crowd, the filmmaker revealed that IG-88 won't actually be making any appearances in his new Disney+ Star Wars series (via Entertainment Weekly). According to Favreau, the assassin droid that fans got to see in the trailer was just another IG unit they've named IG-11.
This might sound disappointing to fans. Many were hoping to see more scenes of IG-88 in action especially after they got a taste of the assassin droid's fighting abilities in the teaser for The Mandalorian. However, this droid seems to be an entirely new character, and if we base our analysis on behind-the-scenes photos that Favreau's shared, it might actually seem like Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is going to lend his voice to the character in the series.
For those who haven't been following the news surrounding The Mandalorian, the upcoming Disney+ series is actually set after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The series puts the spotlight on a Mandalorian bounty hunter being played by Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian premieres November 12, 2019.
