Sony Wanted Spider-Man 3’s Venom To Be “More Of A Millennial”

Marvel fans might be excited to see Tom Hardy as Sony's new Eddie Brock, but Spider-Man 3 star Thomas Haden Church thinks Topher Grace did a good job playing the Spider-Man villain.

Church's comment comes as a surprise, considering how a lot of fans criticized Grace's version of Venom saying that the symbiote's story was ham-fisted into the movie and that the character wasn't comic book accurate.

Sitting down to speak with JoBlo, Haden decided to open up about what attracted him to Sam Raimi's third Spider-Man movie and the studio's original plan. Apparently, Sony didn't originally want to have Venom in Spider-Man 3, instead wanting another younger villain.

"The studio felt like they had me, they had Franco's story continuing, and they were like, we need one more that's more of a millennial. And that's how Venom and Topher Grace came into the picture. And by the way, I thought Topher was great in the movie and Venom is a pretty scary animal. And that was the evolution of that. I was thrilled, man," Church gushed.

Now that explains why the film's Venom turned out quite different from the villain that everyone's been used to in the comics. Hopefully Sony manages to fix things when Venom hits the big screen on October 5, 2018.
