Fans are met with nostalgia after the fan-beloved Tobey Maguire returned to the role of Peter Parker once again in last year's MCU box office milestone, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Together with The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield and the current MCU Peter Parker Tom Holland, we witnessed an unforgettable three-generation reunion of Spider-Mans that fans never thought would happen on the big screens.

While fans definitely enjoyed Tobey Maguire's return, Spider-Man producer revealed in a recent interview that Maguire wasn't the first choice for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy at all. According to producer Amy Pascal and Sam Raimi, several actors were eyed for the role, including Hollywood legends like Leonardo DiCaprio and Heath Ledger.

In a new interview with Variety, looking back on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy, the director together with the production team which includes Amy Pascal, open up about the classic Spider-Man film.

Several actors whose names came up include Leonardo DiCaprio, Wes Bentley, Heath Ledger, Ewan McGregor, Chris Klein, Scott Speedman, Jude Law, and Freddie Prinze Jr. While all of them might fit to be Spider-Man at that time, but none of them fitted the role of a shy high school nerd.

Director Sam Raimi explained, "I met with a number of great actors. Many turned down the role, and they were smart to, because their strengths sometimes were in being special people and portraying other special people on the screen. We needed somebody who was not Christopher Reeve, not extraordinarily tall and handsome and that would turn heads. We needed somebody with a heart and soul that the audience could recognize themselves in."

Producer Amy Pascal chimed in, revealing the first choice for the Sam Raimi trilogy. "Heath Ledger was somebody that we talked about a lot," Pascal said. "Because I’d made a couple of movies with Heath. I love him, and I loved him then. That wasn’t where it went."

We can no longer imagine another actor who would do more justice to Maguire's first interpretation of Spider-Man. But all things considered, Hollywood vet Heath Ledger would undoubtedly execute the role competently, as evidenced by his award-winning Joker portrayal in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

Nevertheless, Maguire remains one of the fan-beloved Spider-Man interpretations even after a decade since he wore the Spider-Man costume. Fans delightfully welcomed Maguire's return in No Way Home and even demanded to push for a Spider-Man 4 that secures the actor's spot in the future of the MCU.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available for digital release.
