Song Kang Ho, IU’s Movie Broker To Premiere In 188 Countries

After the successful achievement at Cannes Film Festival 2022 and its status at the Korean box office, Broker will also be released worldwide.

The Koreeda Hirokazu-directed movie stars Song Kang Ho, IU, Bae Doona, Kang Dong Won, and Lee Joo Young as the main characters.

It follows the story of infants left at the baby box and brokers responsible for finding these babies their new families.

Broker Sold in 188 Countries

As Broker joins The Roundup as the top film at the box office, the award-winning film will also premiere in various countries.

According to News 1 Korea, CJ ENM, the movie’s distributor, shared that the family-themed drama has been pre-sold in 188 countries.

Starting June 16, Broker will debut in Indonesia, followed by Hong Kong and Singapore on June 23, while Japan, Vietnam, and Taiwan will be on June 24. Adding to the list is France on December 7.

Besides its overseas premiere, the hit movie was also selected as the closing film of the 69th Sydney Film Festival.

It only shows that, aside from South Korea, global audiences are showing interest in the drama film.

Currently, Broker is at the second spot in the Korean box office, next to Son Seok Koo and Ma Dong Seok’s The Roundup, which have been in the top spot for four consecutive weeks.

The Koreeda Hirokazu-directed movie has its theatrical release on June 8 and accumulated a total number of 152,364 audiences during its first day.

Is Broker Worth the Hype?

Helmed by the renowned Japanese director Koreeda Hirokazu whose 2016 movie After the Storm debuted in the critically acclaimed Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard category, Broker is his latest project that scored various achievements at the annual ceremony.

Broker won Ecumenical Jury Award for Best Film at the 75th Cannes Film Festival as well as the historic win of Song Kang Ho as Best Actor, making him the first male South Korean star to win the trophy.

The family-themed drama features Song Kang Ho and Kang Dong Won as Sang Hyun and Dong Soo, two broker whose work is to find babies left at the baby box to find their new families.

Meanwhile, IU plays the first-time mom named So Young, who had no choice but to leave her infant at the baby box and had a deal with two brokers.

Bae Doona plays detective Soo Jin who is on the hunt to find brokers. She is working alongside fellow detective Lee, portrayed by Lee Joo Young.

Aside from garnering second place at the box office, Broker scored 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while the movie was rated 7.2 percent on IMDb.
