Solo Leveling is one of the top shows of the winter 2024 season, but is it a safe show to watch for everyone? Here’s a Solo Leveling parents guide explaining what to expect from the series.

Many action-oriented anime are safe enough to watch for kids, as they don’t contain that much in terms of gore and violence.

What about Solo Leveling? Well, the show’s first episode makes it pretty clear what viewers can expect.

Produced by A-1 Pictures (of Sword Art Online and Kaguya-sama fame), Solo Leveling is an anime adaptation of the mega-hit manhwa of the same name.

As Solo Leveling has become an entry point for many into manhwa, the anime adaptation has been highly anticipated since it was announced in July 2022. Finally, the show premiered in early January 2024.

The series is set in the modern world where deadly monsters have shown up from portals. To combat them, humans who have gained supernatural abilities became hunters.

Given its premise, the show is filled with lots of action, with many being noticeably bloody and gory.

Episode 1 of the series is particularly violent as it shows a group of hunters getting annihilated graphically. This means the show is not one to watch for squeamish viewers.

The rest of the show’s episodes haven’t been as gory as the first one, but the show’s fight scenes can be more violent compared to popular shonen titles.

Based on the show’s graphic nature, it’s fair to say that Solo Leveling is not recommended for kids. This is also reflected in its official age rating.

Solo Leveling doesn’t have an age rating on Crunchyroll, though it does have one on Netflix. That’s because it is streaming on the platform in select Asian countries.

On Netflix, the series is listed with a 16+ age rating, meaning it’s not recommended for viewers aged 15 and below.

This lines up with the graphic content shown in the first episode, though aside from violence, the show doesn’t have much in the way of other adult-oriented themes or content.

Of course, Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer are rated 16+ on Netflix, but that hasn't stopped them from being popular with younger viewers.

This means younger viewers still keen on watching the series may be able to do so but with parental supervision.
