Solo Composer Said He Wanted the Score to Feel 'Younger' Than the Original Star Wars

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits digital by the end of the week, and more revelations are coming out about the film. The latest one comes from the movie's composer John Powell who talks about his attempt to make the music in Solo sound more ‘unrefined' than the one we get in the original Star Wars.

Talking to StarWars.com, Powell explains:

"One of the themes that I think Ron [Howard] really wanted to get was youth… You know, try and really make an impression of a youthful, rough, reluctant hero. We know him as the grumpy, old, reluctant hero. He's still got the bloom of youth, he's got more optimism than perhaps he had in the movies we know. In those 10 years, those very incredibly important 10 years that we've all gone through when we all grow up, what is going to happen to him that makes him more cynical? Basically, I'm always trying to create music that sounded, in a way, less formed and less serious than the music we know for A New Hope and that had this slightly younger, more unrefined feeling to it."

Though Powell did write most of the music for Solo, it's worth noting that John Williams had stepped in to write the main theme for Han.

It's no mystery that Solo didn't make that much money in the box office, but a lot of people agree that it was due to the film coming out after the release of box office heavy hitters Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. It was even said that Disney had purposely decided to market Solo less in order to keep the audience's attention on the arrival of Thanos.

Hopefully Solo is one of those movies that will get appreciated over the years. I thought everything about the movie was great, and I'd love to see more of the characters return.

Catch Solo: A Star Wars Story when it hits digital on Sept. 14.
