Solo: A Star Wars Story Is Doing Even Worse At The Box Office

Han Solo might not like knowing the odds, but it looks like things are going to get even worse at the box office for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Not only did the film end up disappointing fans with its poor box office performance during its four-day Memorial Weekend opening last month, Lucasfilm's Star Wars spin-off also took a plunge at the box office during its second week in cinemas.

Though second projections for Solo suggested that the film might do better during its second weekend, saying that the film might only see a 30 percent decline in sales, the film dropped to a steep 66 percent fall during its second week at the box office.

It's not likely going to get better for Solo from here. A steep second-week decline could only be a sign of the film's sales falling further as it goes along its theatrical run.

Though many fans and critics consider Solo a fun romp and an exciting adventure film, there are a lot of reasons why the film is struggling at the box office. Not only did the film have a poor marketing campaign, it also had a lot of trouble behind the scenes during production.

Last year, Lucasfilm decided to fire original directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, sparking concern over the Star Wars spinoff. Though the studio managed to assuage some of the anxiety that came with the directorial shake-up once it brought Ron Howard on board to direct the film, a lot of Star Wars fans still doubted the project. Now it looks like this doubt is really taking a hit on Lucasfilm.
