Plans for the live-action remake of Snow White were first confirmed in October 2016, with Marc Webb confirmed to direct in 2019, and eventually joined film production by September 2019.

Initially announced that the Snow White film would come out in theaters on March 22, 2024, during the 2022 D23 Expo Presentation, the film unfortunately hit a snag when the SAG-AFTRA strike happened.

As of writing, the film has been delayed by a full year, meaning, Snow White is set to hit theaters on March 21, 2025, instead.

The Snow White Live Remake Faced Backlash Early On

In January 2022, Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage called out Disney on WTF with Marc Maron podcast for being 'fucking backwards' in recreating Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Considering that the 54-year-old actor has a form of dwarfism, he pointed out how the remake doesn't exactly change anything from the classic animated movie (via The Guardian):

"I was a little taken aback by [the fact] they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow white, but you're still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. You're progressive in one way, but you're still making that fucking backward story of seven dwarves living in the cave. What the fuck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I'm not loud enough. They were so proud of that, and all love and respect to the actress and the people who thought they were doing the right thing but I’m just like, ‘What are you doing?'"

Disney then responded to Dinklage's statement by a spokesperson forwarding the studios' remark to The Hollywood Reporter:

"To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period."

This is not the first time that Disney received criticism over their plans to remake their animated classics into live-action. In fact, The Little Mermaid had its own, too, for having Halle Bailey leading as the titular mermaid, Ariel.

Disney Takes Out the Dwarves

Apparently, the set photos from Disney's remake of the Snow White movie, which were first published by The Daily Mail in July this year, unveiled that the studio is no longer planning on using dwarves in the live adaptation.

Disney later clarified that the set photos via The Daily Beast that while the photos were from Snow White's production, indeed, they did not feature Rachel Zegler and Andrew Burnap yet.

This has once again sparked controversy amongst fans on other social media platforms, which includes Fox News commentator Tomi Lahren responding on Twitter: "So, they have one little person playing a dwarf to be more 'politically correct'? So, 6 other little people didn't get the job or the check and somehow this is more 'sensitive'?"

To be fair, Dinklage's point to Disney was meant to correct their way of portraying the dwarves as something more than mere 'fairy tale creatures.'

The actor clearly wanted more complicated roles for the community, rather than Disney outrightly deciding to remove the dwarves from the film.

West Side Story's Rachel Zegler is on a roll! Not only is she starring in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as the main protagonist, Lucy Gray Baird of District 12, but she is also leading Disney's live-action Snow White remake in 2025.

Zegler wholeheartedly admitted it has been her dream to make Snow White a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries (via Variety's Actors on Actors series):

"Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me. You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. You don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that. When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry. We need to love them in the right direction. At the end of the day, I have a job to do that I’m really excited to do. I get to be a Latina princess."

Starring opposite her is Wonder Woman and Red Notice's Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, aka Snow's mother.

Gadot described her villainous role on Flaunt: "[The Evil Queen] is so far away from me and it was so much fun to play. I'm so used to playing the good guy, but there's something so liberating [in a role] where you can break all the rules."

Here are the other cast members starring in the live remake:

  • Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman
  • Andrew Burnap as Jonathan (new character)
  • Martin Klebba as Grumpy
  • Colin Michael Carmichael and Dujonna Gift as a part of the Dwarves

Considering that Snow White's live adaptation is still in the middle of production, we have no news yet on what the official synopsis will be; if the remake will be different from the original animation or not. However, here is what the main actress had to tease about Snow White:

Rachel Zegler Claims the Live Remake Takes a 'New Modern Edge' To Snow White

The Snow White live remake didn't only receive backlash and endless criticisms for turning the titular princess into a Latina princess, but also with the leading actress' statement on Variety.

In the interview, Zegler called the classic 1937 film "extremely dated when it comes to women being in roles of power", in which the remake will turn their version of the Disney princess into a "fantastic leader."

Furthermore, she added how the live-action Snow White will be bringing a new modern edge to Snow:

"We absolutely wrote a Snow White that is not gonna be saved by the prince. She’s not going to be saved by the prince and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be."
