A fourth Star Trek film has long been in the works ever since Star Trek Beyond was released in 2016 with different directors and writers attached. Last year, the project got a significant development when WandaVision director Matt Shakman was hired to direct the film with a release date set in 2023. A lot of fans have been waiting for a new update ever since and it looks like we won't be getting one anytime soon (at least for now).

Speaking with Collider, Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the Star Trek Kelvin timeline films, was asked if he has any update on the fourth film that is currently in the works. While he confirmed that he already spoke to Shakman, he said that he is still waiting for any news regarding the film, but he is open to returning and working with the cast members again.

"I don't know much," Pegg said. "I've met Matt briefly and seems like a great guy. I love the work he did on WandaVision. It's always waiting with these things, because the world is an uncertain place. COVID's thrown everything into a spin. There's so many factors that have to align in order for these things to happen. I'm just quietly waiting for news basically. And I texted J.J. the other day and said, "Tell me what's happening." He's just like, "We're waiting for news."

He added, "Yeah. I'd love to see more adventures in the Kelvin universe. Obviously, any chance I get to work with those actors is... I'll leap at it, albeit it's going to be a little sad this time, but stay tuned."

Pegg was referring to Anton Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov, as he passed away in 2016 weeks before the release of Star Trek Beyond.

Based on the actor's response, it looks like there's no confirmation yet if the fourth Star Trek film will have the Kelvin timeline cast members although, given that he had a brief meeting with Shakman, it is a hint that they are planning it to be a follow up to Star Trek Beyond but they haven't lock in the cast yet. It is also likely that the film will have a new cast.

Given that the film is set to be released in late 2023, we should be hearing more details about the project soon as they have to start production within this year in order to make it with its release date unless it's going to be delayed again.
