Sigourney Weaver Says James Cameron Supports Blomkamp’s Idea For Alien 5

It looks like Alien director James Cameron actually liked Neill Blomkamp's idea for Alien 5.

The Elysium and District 9 director has been expressing interest in directing Alien 5 for years, and while it's very unlikely that the project might come along, Sigourney Weaver, who has also expressed interest in the project, says Cameron actually supports Blomkamp's idea.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Weaver decided to open up about the forgotten Alien 5, saying that while the gears for production almost began to turn, the project had been set back by bad timing.

"We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we'd have to wait probably," Weaver told the publication. "I'm busy doing Avatar 4and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he'd do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it's a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill's got like three projects going at once."

While some fans would definitely love Alien 5, it might be difficult for the project to pick up now with Blomkamp busy with his projects. Besides, it's hard to imagine Fox greenlighting another Alien movie. Sure, the Alien franchise might have produced some pretty strong and defining entries in science fiction film history, but the third and fourth films in the franchise turned out to be both financially and critically disappointing. The faceoff films between Alien and the Predator that followed after turned out toe be even more so.

Disney is currently acquiring 20th Century Fox, including the Alien franchise. Let's wait and see what Disney's going to do with the series.
