Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finally premiered in cinemas today, and while there's been a whole lot of anticipation over the film, there's been a whole lot of negative energy as well. Though the film opened to a strong $40 million this Thursday, The Rise of Skywalker didn't fare so well among critics and the film ended up flopping in China.
Now, after a mixed bag of a sequel trilogy, some are wondering whether or not Disney should just reboot the entire franchise. According to CNET, a reboot of the galaxy far, far away seems rather inevitable given the franchise's current state of affairs. The site complains that Star Wars doesn't seem to be building towards one cohesive story. Instead, most of the different entries in the franchise, especially those in the sequel trilogy, feel like they've been mashed up together one at a time. The new trilogy doesn't seem to have one cohesive story, instead it offers a direction and tone that changes from one film to the next.
Some fans seem to feel the same way as well. Taking to Twitter, Star Wars fans suggest that Disney ought to simply reboot everything.
Seeing how the Mickey Mouse House has a fondness for rebooting classic animated movies like Beauty and the Beast, Jungle Book, and Mulan, it doesn't come as a surprise to see fans expecting a reboot of Star Wars.
If The Rise of Skywalker doesn't do as well as it should at the box office, Disney may attempt at making drastic changes to the franchise to course-correct Star Wars. Let's wait and see what happens from here on out.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
