Sherlock's Andrew Scott Joins HBO's His Dark Materials

Andrew Scott is probably best known for playing Moriarty opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in BBC's Sherlock, but he's been having some great roles with recent shows like Black Mirror and Fleabag. Just in, it's been announced that Scott will be playing a part in HBO's reboot of The Golden Compass franchise—His Dark Materials.

The official account on Twitter posted this photo of Scott with co-star Lin-Manuel Miranda:

Miranda is set to play Lee Scoresby in the show, and Scott is said to be playing Col. John Parry a.k.a. Jopari. In the original books, Jopari accidentally finds himself in Lyra's world and becomes a famous shaman/scholar; his animal companion (or daemon) is said to be that of an osprey.

Personally, I think Scott is a great actor, and he manages to make even the villains he plays very fun to watch. I can't wait to see how he plays out here in His Dark Materials.

Besides Miranda and Scott, the series will also have James McAvoy playing the role of Lord Asriel and Ruth Wilson playing the part of Mrs. Coulter. The lead of the show, Lyra, will be played by Dafne Keen, who is best known for her role as X-23 in 2017's Logan.

His Dark Materials is one of the supreme works of imaginative fiction for both children and adults published in the 20th century. Northern Lights introduces Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology, and magic are entwined. Lyra's search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. In The Subtle Knife, she is joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds. As Lyra learns the truth about her parents and her prophesied destiny, the two young people are caught up in a war against celestial powers that ranges across many worlds and leads to a thrilling conclusion in The Amber Spyglass.

His Dark Materials is set to come out on HBO this fall.
