It's pretty much known now that Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi was a divisive movie among Star Wars fans. The debate about the movie has always been apparent, but a comment from The Rise of Skywalker director really got to the fans who loved the last movie, including She-Hulk writer Dana Schwartz.
In a recent interview with NY Times, J.J. Abrams praised The Last Jedi because it was "full of surprises and all sorts of bold choices." However, what got the fans' attention is what he said after. "It's a bit of a meta approach to the story," he added. He thinks that people don't actually go to Star Wars, "to be told, ‘This doesn't matter.'"
It is also worth noting that the director said TLJ laid the groundwork for Episode IX because the story needed a "pendulum swing in one direction in order to swing in the other."
His comment wasn't exactly received well by fans, especially those who genuinely supported Johnson's movie. Taking to Twitter, Schwartz expressed her frustrations over Abrams' interview. "This is f**king bulls**t," she said. "Throwing Rian Johnson under the bus to please some crazy fanboys."
The author claims that Johnson "made the most interesting and ambitious Star Wars movie" since Empire Strikes Back. She thinks the middle section is "the hardest one," especially since Abrams "left him with Han dead" and that Luke just retreated to an island.
"Rian [Johnson] set up a compelling film that asked NEW questions about the Star Wars universe," she added, pointing out that it's different from the usual story of pointing out the good and the bad.
