She-Hulk Finale's Breaking the Fourth Wall Scene Has a Surprising Origin

The final episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law featured their biggest breaking-the-fourth-wall moment when She-Hulk actually went to the offices of Marvel Studios and met an A.I. named K.E.V.I.N. (a nod to Kevin Feige), the mastermind behind the MCU, to try to convince him to change the ending.

That huge twist caught a lot of fans by surprise and it became one of Marvel's biggest creative risks that fortunately paid off based on the responses. So why did they decide to take that direction for the finale and who actually came up with that idea?

In an interview with Marvel.com, head writer and executive producer Jessica Gao revealed that the idea for that big breaking-the-fourth-wall moment in the finale came from a conversation that she had with Kevin Feige, who encouraged her to not depend on the usual third-act battle when it comes to the ending of the series.

"I think I probably wrote like, 20 versions of a finale that went all over the place and I started feeling like, ‘Well, this is a Marvel show, I better give them the classic Marvel ending," Gao said. "'Big villain fight, big finale. But it never felt right because I was trying to fit a square peg in a round hole."

She continued, "[Feige] really opened my mind to the idea that it's OK to not do that because I was trying to do what I thought was the Marvel expectation of what the show had to be."

"He was like, ‘Why? No one's telling you to do that, you don't have to do that, you can do something completely different, we should be doing something completely different because this show is so different from anything that Marvel has done.’ It was getting that permission from him that really made me think, Oh.’ It just changed everything."

It is interesting to learn that Feige actually encouraged Gao and the writers to not go into the typical third-act battle that we usually see in Marvel movies and TV shows and it prompted them to the wild idea of actually breaking the fourth wall to the Marvel Studios, which is a very meta move.

With the responses that it received, we can definitely say that this creative decision paid off and it was a huge success since the majority of the fans and audience embraced the move.
