Shazam! Opening Weekend Projected To Be Lowest In The DCEU

There might be a lot of hype building up over Shazam! but it seems like Zachary Levi's debut is currently projected to have the lowest box office opening in the DC Extended Universe.

According to a report by Variety, analysts expect Shazam! to gross more than $40 million at the US Box office during its opening weekend early next month. This might seem a little bit low, especially for a DC film. Aquaman opened with $67 million in the North American box office back in December, marking the film as the lowest DCEU opening. Wonder Woman did much better with its $103.2 million domestic opening when it premiered in June 2017. The highest stateside opening remains under Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice with the film sitting at a $166 million opening weekend haul.

These estimates for Shazam! may come as a major surprise to some. Early reviews for the upcoming DC standalone movie have been nothing but stellar. Word of mouth has been pretty strong too, many discussing the film on social media.

Despite these numbers, DC fans shouldn't all be too concerned about the movie. Unlike Henry Cavill's Superman, Ben Affleck's Batman, and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Shazam isn't that popular of a character – well, atleast to the uninitiated mainstream audience. Still, Shazam could do pretty well for itself as it goes along its cinematic run. Aquaman became the DCEU's overall top earner despite having the lowest opening, so we'll see what the tide makes of the upcoming movie.

Shazam! premieres April 5, 2019.
