Shazam! Fury of the Gods Director Compares Film To Game of Thrones and The Hobbit

James Gunn may still be restructuring the DC Universe left and right, but Shazam! Fury of the Gods is not going anywhere, as its new movie trailer has just been released. The new trailer features the biggest threat the “Shazamily” is about to face and one of them happens to be a dragon, which wouldn’t have existed in the first place had it not been for Shazam! 2 director David F. Sandberg.

Sandberg, recently speaking with Entertainment Weekly, emphasized to the people in charge of editing the movie trailer to “put some monsters” to showcase the new threat: “I was telling the people cutting the trailers, “Please, you gotta put some monsters in there. At least little glimpses of them!” Check out the new full trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods below:

Considering that even Shazam called out to the dragon “Hey, Khaleesi!” as a joke, any Game of Thrones fan would immediately pertain to the HBO show or even in other fantasy franchises like The Hobbit. Well, it just so happens that even the director himself compared the mythological dragon to both.

“It was also trying to figure out, well, how can we do it differently?” Sandberg explained, “We’ve seen a lot of dragons in Game of Thrones and The Hobbit and everything. But this is from mythology. It’s a dragon that’s sort of made of wood, because he’s born from a tree.”

In the final trailer, Billy Batson is seen having a showdown with a dragon at Citizen Bank’s Stadium while Lucy Liu’s Kalypso is riding on its back through the city. Seeing as dragons are no stranger to popular culture, Sandberg admits the difficulty of having their Shazam! sequel dragon stand out from the aforementioned shows’ dragon versions. But the trailer did play it off by acknowledging that even Shazam knows where the audience could resonate the dragon with, aka Emilia Clarke’s the Mother of Dragons herself.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated for release on March 17. Check out more details and updates here.
