Shazam 2 Casts Helen Mirren as DC Sequel's Main Villain

It looks like the DC Extended Universe has added a true screen legend. Helen Mirren has joined the cast of Shazam: Fury of the Gods where she is set to play the mysterious main villain.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Mirren will portray Hespera, the daughter of Atlas and sister to Rachel Zegler's mystery character. Hespera appears to be a completely new character created for the DCEU film.

We're loving the idea of Mirren being a part of the DCEU considering that she has always been a powerful and unique presence in all of her projects. Most recently, Mirren portrayed the smart Queenie Shaw in Hobbs and Shaw, a role that she would reprise in F9. Hopefully, we'll get to see a lot of her in Fury of the Gods.

The premise of Shazam 2 is still a mystery but director David F. Sandberg had already stated that the sequel will bring in "unexpected villains." With that in mind, we truly don't know what to expect in Fury of the Gods but we're looking forward to the surprise.

The upcoming sequel will bring back Asher Angel and Zachary Levi as the young and adult versions of Billy Batson. The rest of the cast of the first film is also set to return along with Mark Strong, who could reprise his role as Doctor Sivana.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods is currently in pre-production but filming has not yet started. The sequel is currently scheduled for release on June 2, 2023.
